In a small Warehouse in Cambodia's capital, workers sit and spin empty plastic bottles into strips. What they do with those strips is the start of a solution to the country's plastic problem.
Has Kea:
Plastic bottles are more expensive overseas and they were upcycling them. I learned that plastic bottles here are cheaper, together with the cost of other raw materials and the cost of labour, so I decided to design them into the shape of nice-looking broomsticks.
Narrator:
Since March of 2023, workers here have transformed about 40 tons of discarded plastic bottles into brooms. That's important to note, since about 38,000 tons of plastic piles up in the capital Phnom Penh alone every day and according to the Ministry of Environment, single-use plastic makes up the majority of waste found in landfills and waterways, these statistics worried Kea, so he decided to do something about it.
Has Kea:
The buyers are excited, and we as the manufacturer are also happy as it benefits society, which is supporting us too. This also helps reduce environmental pollution and encourages people to collect plastic bottles to sell at a higher price, which in turn, could earn them a better living.
Narrator:
High-quality broomsticks are in great demand in Cambodia. They're usually imported from nearby countries such as Vietnam or Thailand. The imports, however, are often not very sturdy and Kea's upcycled plastic broomsticks are ideal for high-intensity scrubbing.
Suon Kosal:
This broomstick is quite solid, not easy to break, and the plastic part doesn`t slip from the bamboo pole like the ordinary broomsticks.

Kea`s team produces 500 brooms daily and they retail for up to 15,00 riel (US$ 3.5) a piece.
