Rosanne Maloney: Nepalese born Pratik Sigdal is proud of his culture. But when he started working in aged care, his background was used against him.
Pratik Sigdel:From the very first day they used to tell us like you just go away. You just go back to your country where you're from. I don't like you .I don't like your skin or something like that.
Rosanne Maloney : Pratik encountered racism from residents almost every day.
Pratik Sigdel: They are suffering from some medical conditions or some mental behaviors. That's why they need support.
Rosanne Maloney: Bianca Brijnath North trains workers in dealing with racism. But she says the industry needs to do more to support staff .
Bianca Brijnath: It's an elephant in the room that nobody talks about but it is there and people do experience it on a daily basis and it really is a very much specific to your skin color, the way you speak your accent and how you look.
Rosanne Maloney:Study in Adelaide found African aged care workers had experienced racism ranging from verbal abuse to residents rejecting care.
Dr. Temitope OlasunkanmiAlimi: They could say get off me. You animal. I don't want black people caring for me.
Rosanne Maloney: She found nurses were reluctant to raise the issue for fear of jeopardizing their visas or their jobs.
Dr. Temitope OlasunkanmiAlimi: They feel demoralized. like they sort of lose their sense of identity and self-worth through this act of microaggressions displayed towards them.
Rosa Maloney: Australia dependency on migrant workers is only increasing. By 2020 ,more than a third of early and linguistically diverse and since then the government's tried to attract more migrant workers to the sector by relaxing at visa requirements and fast tracking processing times.
Rosa Maloney:The government-funded survey of aged care workers is now underway. It'll be used to help develop resources to combat racism.
Pratik Sigdel: You can't just like eliminate the racism. You just can't. What we can do is just to minimize.
Rosa Maloney: It supporting those workers needed to fix a struggling sector.
