On the outskirts of the South Korean capital Seoul, Seen Aromi shows her YouTube followers how she practises yoga and sleeps as late as she wants. Aromi’s channel aims to empower her more than 200,000 followers, many of whom voice shame about being unmarried and childless. However, her message has drawn backlash in a country struggling with the world’s lowest birth rate.

A South Korean vlogger has found happiness in the being unmarried and childless.

 

So much so that she started her own YouTube channel promoting the lifestyle.

 

See Aromi:Not getting married is my greatest achievement because I never had marriage as a goal. If that were the case, getting married would have been an accomplishment. But from a very young age, being a good wife, becoming a mother, and starting a family have never been the ultimate goal in my life. So then, what was life`s goal? My goal was being able to earn money, while travelling freely wherever I wanted to go.

 

The 37-year-old`s message comes at a time when her country`s economy is struggling to adapt to a shrinking population. South Korea has the lowest birth rate in the world, and has poured billions into promoting marriage and having children. Despite the efforts, many young Koreans continue to opt out for financial reasons. Those reasons resonate with Aromi, who tells her 200,000 YouTube subscribers not to feel ashamed or guilty about being single. She herself has attracted backlash online, with critics claiming she is really lonely or calling her “selfish" for not getting married. Aromi says none of that is true.

 

See Aromi: I am very satisfied with being able to freely do what I want, in a space I like, at a time I want, and to live a much more independent life. While my friends were having children, I gave birth to two YouTube channels and a book. I also did my part and I am very proud of it.

만약 그렇다면 결혼은 성과가 있었을 것입니다. 하지만 아주 어릴 때부터 좋은 아내가 되고, 엄마가 되고, 가정을 꾸리는 것이 제 인생의 궁극적인 목표가 된 적이 없습니다. 그렇다면 인생의 목표는 무엇이었을까?
제 목표는 제가 가고 싶은 곳을 자유롭게 여행하면서 돈을 버는 것이었습니다.
37세의 이 메시지는 우리나라 경제가 인구 감소에 적응하기 위해 고군분투하고 있는 시기에 나온 것입니다.
한국은 세계에서 가장 낮은 출산율을 가지고 있고, 결혼을 촉진하고 아이를 가지는데 수십억 달러를 쏟아 부었습니다. 이러한 노력에도 불구하고, 많은 젊은 한국인들은 경제적인 이유로 계속해서 탈락하고 있습니다.
그러한 이유들은 그녀의 200,000명의 유튜브 구독자들에게 미혼인 것에 대해 부끄러워하거나 죄책감을 갖지 말라고 말하는 아로미에게 반향을 일으키고 있습니다.
