Description:

We sometimes associate 'fish' with 'fingers', but not the sort that can scratch an itch. So how do these animals cope when they get that itchy feeling?

Itching without hands can be a challenge. But some fish have a surprising solution.

Rupert Collins (Museum Scientist): Scratching is really important for fish. They do it for a variety of reasons. Particularly to exfoliate and get rid of parasites, and sometimes they use it for courtship. Fish will scratch by rubbing up against rocks and hard surfaces. But recent research shows that some of them will actually scratch up against sharks. Shark skin is covered by tiny tooth like structures called dermal denticles. These are quite smooth in the nose to tail direction, but quite rough in the opposite direction. In fact, dogfish used to be used to scrub the decks of boats. So shark skin can make a really effective scratching surface in places like the open ocean when there aren¡¯t many other options. For example, tuna have been observed to queue up to scratch against a shark.

Questions:

1. Why is scratching important for fish, and for what reasons do they engage in this behavior?

2. How do some fish utilize sharks for scratching, and what makes shark skin an effective scratching surface?

3. Can you explain the role of dermal denticles in shark skin and how they contribute to the scratching behavior observed in fish?
