A new sign that one of the world's biggest clothing markets could be warming to sustainability.

Fast fashion giant Uniqlo tested its first ever second hand store in downtown Tokyo.

For 10 days in October 2023, store sold recycled clothing at a third of the original price in Harajuku District.

Uniqlo is a major player in an industry singled out for its immense carbon emissions and other pollutant like microplastics.

It has also ridden a wave of consumers buying and throwing away ever more clothes.

Awareness has been growing of the sector's huge environmental impact.

But it has yet to spark much interest in second-hand options in the country.

Thrift stores selling vintage or second-hand items can be found all over Japan.

But they have mostly been seen as a niche confined to hipsters.

Market research firm Japan consuming found that the secondhand clothing Market represents less than 6% of the 75billion US industry.

Industry experts say part of the reason Japan's concern with hygiene.

However, Uniqlo's new pop-up could be signaling a shift in attitudes.

Aya Hanada: Customers who are coming here tell us that wearing clothes for a long time is a good thing after all.

So,the idea of sustainability, the idea of wearing clothes for as long as possible and not throwing them away, is spreading among people in Japan.

Rising consumer price in Japan after years of recession has also driven acceptance of used clothing.

The travel has been reflected in the growth in online sales between individuals.

In 2022, clothing was the top-voted category for purchase on Mercari, the default online platform for selling and buying used items.

However, even with the strong growth in recent years, there is still a long way to go.

In Japan, 34% Japan's of discarded clothing is recycled or reused according to the country's environment Ministry.

however that also includes exports to developing countries where the garments open and up incinerated.

At the same time, many in the country are still more influenced by trends.

Customer: I am aware of the sustainability issue, and I am aware that it's better to find more use for something instead of throwing it away. But I often buy simply because they are fashionable.
