°ü¸®ÀÚ 2023-12-07 ¿ÀÈÄ 12:53:10 30522

Description:

Indian rescuers pulled out all 41 workers trapped inside a collapsed tunnel in the Indian Himalayas with some help from a group of people who do so-called rathole mining, which is effectively banned in the country. Authorities tapped the rat miners for help when heavy machinery broke down during a rescue operation that had dragged on for more than two weeks.

This is the moment the first of 41 trapped workers emerged from a collapsed tunnel in India They were buried deep inside the transport project in the Himalayas for 17 days But how did they get out?

Banshidhar Tiwari: All the workers have been rescued.

They are safe and doctors have examined them.

All of them have been sent in ambulances to the hospital.

Digging machinery had repeatedly broken down during the rescue operation.

With 15 meters (50ft) still go to the reach the men, authorities turned to 'rat miners' for help.

'Rathole' mining is hazardous and controversial method used extensively in India's northeast to extract thin seams coal.

The mining techniques got its name because it resembles how rats burrow into the ground.

Rat miners have developed skills to dig into tight spaces and depths machines cannot reach.

Naseer: you can see the results of out efforts. When you were working in the tunnel how did you feel knowing that the lives of 11 people depended on you?

That wasn't adding to our worries but there were other obstuctions we came across, like iron, iron rods and so on we cut them and everythin was succesful.

Rathole mining was banned in the 1970s, when India nationalised its coal mines.

But the illegal practice continues, often relying on children or short adults extract coal.

The transport tunnel project is part of new US$1.5 billion highway.

It will connect 4 Hindu pilgrimage sites along 890km (500miles) of road.
