Korean Culture Festival in Brazil

On August 17th and 18th, the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil hosted the Korean Culture Festival. The event was held to promote the special relationship that the city has forged with South Korea.

The two-day festival was organized by the Korean Cultural Center* and the Brazilian Korean Association,* in cooperation with the Sao Paolo government. Now in its 17th year, the event attracted more than 100,000 visitors.

This year¡¯s event featured an energetic performance by the Korean boy band, NTX. It also included a K-pop dance competition, street concerts, and a special dance performance that mixed Brazilian samba and the traditional Korean fan dance called buchaechum.

In addition, festivalgoers learned how to play the traditional Korean board game, yutnori. They also tried various Korean snacks and dishes at food stalls.

Sao Paulo is the most populous city in Brazil and is home to 45,000 Korean expatriates. The residents of the metropolis also show an extremely high interest in Korean culture.

Along with holding the festival, the city officially recognizes Hanbok Day on October 21st, Korean Food Day on October 23rd, and Kimchi Day on November 22nd. Furthermore, there have been discussions to celebrate Hangeul Day on October 9th.
