Time on the Moon

The White House directed NASA to design a new lunar time system known as Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT).

Every day, time flows 58.7 microseconds quicker on the Moon due to its different gravitational field intensity. This minor change may appear tiny, yet it can disrupt spacecraft synchronization. The US government intends to use this new opportunity to assist coordinate efforts to reach the Moon by both the US and commercial firms.

NASA will have until 2026 to develop CLT. They stated that while numerous countries and organizations compete to send astronauts to the Moon, international rules must be established.

Astronomer Professor Catherine Heymans explained the difficulty of estimating lunar time in light of Einstein's general relativity theory and gravitational influences. As lunar research progresses, it becomes increasingly important to establish a consistent time standard.

Questions:

1. What prompted the White House to direct NASA to develop a new lunar time system, and what are the objectives of this initiative?

2. How does the gravitational field intensity on the Moon contribute to the need for a specialized timekeeping system, and what potential challenges does this pose for spacecraft synchronization?

3. What is Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT), and how does it differ from conventional timekeeping systems?

4. What is the significance of establishing international rules for lunar exploration efforts, particularly in the context of various countries and commercial firms vying to reach the Moon?

5. Could you elaborate on the scientific and theoretical complexities involved in estimating lunar time, especially in light of Einstein's general relativity theory and gravitational influences, as discussed by astronomer Professor Catherine Heymans?
