Jana: Now to your Thanksgiving spread and the jump in
egg prices. ABC's Reena Roy is here with a look at why the prices are rising
right when we're preparing for those Thanksgiving feasts. Reena, good morning.
Reena: Hey, Jana, good morning to you. Yeah, that's
right; we are in the home stretch, which means millions of Americans are
hitting the stores right now. Unfortunately, they'll probably have to shell out
a little more cash as they prepare for the big dinner, particularly when it
comes to eggs.
Eggs have gone up more than any other food in the last
year; the average for a dozen is now $3.37. That's roughly a 50% increase.
Looking back to last year, eggs were about $2 on average, and experts say bird
flu is mostly to blame.
The disease usually spreads fast around this time of
year when birds are migrating, so supply has been low and prices have been
high. And federal officials say this increase in bird flu cases will likely
affect American wallets even going into next year, guys.
Jana: Okay, so that's something we will keep track of.
And Reena, what do we know about the prices of other key supermarket items,
especially ahead of Thanksgiving?
Reena: Yeah, well, there is some good news on that
front. Overall, groceries are up just about 1% from last year, and when we talk
turkey, we're actually looking at a 6% decrease on average. For pumpkin pie
mix, you'll also see a similar price cut, which I'm pretty pumped for because I
don't know about you guys, but I love me some pumpkin pie.
You and I both, Reena; you and I both! And the pecan pie, too. Thank you so much for that.
