KTX Trains Exported to Uzbekistan

KTX is the national high-speed rail system that carries passengers throughout Korea. Recently, the Korean government announced a deal to export the domestic bullet trains to Uzbekistan.

The contract was made in June during a state visit by President Yoon Suk-yeol to Uzbekistan. The deal is reportedly worth 270 billion won.

Uzbekistan agreed to purchase six trains, each consisting of seven cars. They will be supplied by the train manufacturer, Hyundai Rotem, along with the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL). Additionally, the contract will include 42 months of maintenance on the vehicles.

Uzbekistan¡¯s high-speed rail system is expected to cover a total of 1,216 kilometers. Its various routes will connect different parts of the Central Asian nation, including its capital, Tashkent.

This is the first time for Korea to export the domestic high-speed rail system and its technology. The achievement is more notable because KTX marks its 20th anniversary this year.

Korea launched its first express rail service in 2004 after acquiring the technology from France. The nation then spent decades improving its rails. In May, KORAIL introduced its latest train model, called the KTX-Cheongnyong. The state-of-the-art train can travel at up to 320 kilometers per hour.
