More office workers moonlight in epidemic

A growing number of office workers are moonlighting during the coronavirus epidemic since working from home leaves them more free time to do it. Online sharing platform Happy College surveyed 1,020 office workers recently and found that a whopping 49.2 percent were moonlighting. They earned an average of W950,000 a month in additional income (US$1=W1,132). Services such as intermediaries hooking up clients, online shopping site developers, and tax experts catering to moonlighters are thriving apace.

Websites like Kmong and Soomgo, which connect people for part-time jobs, are seeing a business boom. Kmong's users surged from around 100,000 in March last year to 250,000 at present. Park Hyun-ho at Kmong said, "In the past, most of our users were freelancers, but now many office workers have signed up." Soomgo, which hooks moonlighters up with part-time jobs within 48 hours, said half of its 570,000 users are office workers hoping to find extra work. Online lectures offer them tips on a wide range of subjects, from cryptocurrency and real estate investing to parcel delivery. There are around 2,000 tutorial books available on Kmong.

Happy College has a platform that lets users sell digital tutorial books on subjects from job skills to hobbies. At present, 1,400 people offer 3,200 classes, while 28,000 people have signed up. Online shopping malls are among the favored moonlighting options. Naver offers a platform for online shopping and users increased by 33,000 a month since March last year. Naver says they are mostly are office workers doing it as their second job. Others offer tax services to moonlighters. Jobs opened an online tax consultancy service called 3.3 in May last year and some 570,000 people have used the service so far. The name of the service came from the 3.3-percent income tax rate for freelancers.
