Product Placement in Television Shows

Let¡¯s say you are at home watching your favorite drama on television. Suddenly, the main character is shown driving the latest automobile manufactured by a famous company. Later, the character is drinking a refreshment, with the name of the product highly visible to the camera.

Chances are, both of these instances are examples of product placement, otherwise known as PPL. It is when a company pays the broadcasters of a television series to present its product as part of the story.

Some viewers complain when they notice product placement occurring in a show. They say that PPL can be very distracting to the viewers. The commercial items are often placed so that they stand out, making the scene feel awkward. This can take away from the reality of the story, especially when it happens during an important moment.

Furthermore, these critics argue that the broadcasters behind television programs already make a great deal of money through advertising. They do this by regularly airing long commercial breaks* before and after each and every show. So, the viewers should not have to sit through advertisements during the shows, as well.

On the other hand, there are those who have no problem with product placement. In fact, these supporters say they enjoy seeing commercial items in the middle of their favorite programs. When recognizable objects are imbedded into the scene, they heighten the story¡¯s sense of reality. Then, the story and the characters feel as if they belong in the actual world.

Also, these supporters point out the cost of making a hit television series can be extremely high. Broadcasters must invest greatly in writing and producing the shows, as well as in hiring popular actors to star in them. So, in the big picture, product placement helps to make such quality programming possible, they say.

Questions:
1. Explain the concept and purpose of product placement.
2. How come many viewers find these insertions distracting and awkward? Why do they also consider this unreasonable in financial terms?
3. On the contrary, why do some view PPL more positively and relatably?
4. Do you agree that allowing such indirect advertising is acceptable to recoup the high cost of making and producing quality TV programming? Why or why not?

5. In your opinion, how can product placement be perfectly done? How can it be made tolerable and fun?
