Formal Speech in Korean Language

The Korean language is made up of two ways of speaking. Informal speech is used when talking to people equal or lower in age or standing. Meanwhile, formal speech is required when communicating with people older than yourself or higher in rank.

However, some people wonder whether Koreans should stop using formal speech. These people say that its use can create an inequality in conversations. This imbalance can prevent the free-flowing exchange of ideas from occurring. So, they argue, it may be better to get rid of formal speech and enable all communication to take place among equals.

Furthermore, these people say that Korean is one of the few languages in the world with strict formal speech. Most languages, including English, have changed over the centuries and dropped such distinctions. So, it is better for the Korean language to evolve and get more aligned with modern ways of communication.

Others, however, say that formal speech is a necessary part of the Korean language. They point out that formal speech is an effective way to show respect to those above you in level or age. It ensures that certain decorum is kept during all conversations. Were it not to exist, people could stop showing proper consideration when speaking with others.

Also, these people argue that the use of formal speech is more than a characteristic of the Korean language. It also reflects many of the values and traditions that define the Korean people. Therefore, it must be maintained in order to keep Koreans connected to their cultural roots, they say.
