Urban Beekeeping Made Easier

Urban agriculture has become a hotly debated topic in recent years. One aspect that is quickly growing in popularity is beekeeping. Now, one company is aiming to make beekeeping accessible to ordinary people with its new creation, the B-Box. The B-Box was developed by the Italian startup, Beeing. It is designed to make caring for bees and harvesting honey much easier, particularly in an urban setting. The main chamber of the B-Box is a small plywood enclosure that houses a bee colony and honeycombs. To enter the box, the bees must travel through a 2.2-meter-high chimney with an opening at the top.

This keeps the insects at a safe distance from humans, eliminating the need for protective equipment. Additionally, the box comes equipped with a transparent side panel so that you can observe what the bees are doing.

When the honey is ready for harvesting, the beekeeper can pull a lever on the box. This allows the bees to exit the chamber but not enter it. After just a few hours, the bees will have vacated the honeycomb chamber, allowing the keeper to safely collect the sweet, sticky reward. The makers of the B-Box said they hoped their invention would encourage a rebirth in harvesting honey, which helps to increase the bee population.

Among insects, honey bees are the most important crop pollinator, helping to fertilize over 100 different fruits and vegetables. As a result, developing sustainable methods of beekeeping is becoming increasingly important to ensure that food crops remain plentiful.

One such effort was undertaken in 2014 by Norwegian architecture firm Snohetta. The architects installed a series of wooden hives on the roof of a food court in Oslo to attract more bees to the city. Moreover, in Sweden, several fast food chains, including McDonald¡¯s, have also installed beehives on their roofs.

Questions:
1. What's the intended purpose of the creation of B-Box?
2. Describe its structure and design. How does this let the bees make honey and keep the humans safe at a distance?
3. How important are the bees in the sustainability of the crops?
4. With such convenient measure, will this successfully encourage more beekeeping in your opinion? Why or why not?
5. If the bee population continues to drop, what are the unlikely repercussions?

Vocabulary:
1. Urban agriculture - the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in or around urban areas

2. Crop pollinator - one that pollinates such as an agent (such as an insect) that pollinates flowers
