How to battle vitamin D deficiency in winter

Winter makes it difficult for the body to produce enough vitamin D from sunlight, so what can you do to stay healthy in the dark months? There is no need for a sleeveless shirt or undone buttons as sunlight penetrates fabric. All that is needed is to make good use of the few sunlight hours and bask in the feeble rays for half an hour, perhaps by taking a walk to keep the body warm.

If that is out of the question due to work commitments, a UV lamp can also help, or even a visit to a tanning salon. Elderly people, however, should take care on icy roads as January is the most dangerous months for falls.

Guide Questions:
1. Discuss the importance of getting Vitamin D.
2. What can winter weather do to our body?
3. How can we keep our bodies healthy and getting enough sunlight?
4. Enumerate some of the things that would help in getting enough heat and sunlight to our skin.
5. Do you think that people are unhealthier during winter season? Why or why not?

Vocabulary:
1. dangerous - likely to cause problems or to have adverse consequences
2. tanning - (of a pale-skinned person or their skin) become brown or browner after exposure to the sun
