Students must have required vaccinations by Jan. 8, or they won't be allowed back in school after break. Many are not in compliance with measles, mumps, and rubella, KIRO reports. “I think they did the right thing," one parent says. Another adds that, "If some people aren’t pulling their weight, it's not good for the majority." The district is holding three free clinics over break to help. Letters were sent to 2,274 students out of compliance, per KOMO. The school districts are late, too: Washington state law requires them to start excluding students without vaccinations 30 days after school starts in the fall. Tacoma schools began doing that in October. Earlier this year, state lawmakers eliminated the "personal preference" exemption for the vaccinations after a measles outbreak, leaving only religious and medical exceptions. "If a student comes to school on the 8th and their records aren’t up-to-date, they’ll just be held aside," a Seattle schools staff member says. "Their parents or guardian will be contacted."
